Are you lucky enough to be at Smith Mountain Lake for the Christmas holidays? Do you want a beautiful fresh cut Christmas tree? If so, Smith Mountain Lake's Rotary will be selling the most sought-after tree, the Frasier Fir. The Frasier Fir is the most widely used because of its fragrance, shape, strong limbs, and ability to retain its soft needles for a long time when cut (which do not prick easily when hanging ornaments).
Starting Wednesday, November 24, 2010, trees will be available for purchase at Hot Shots Family Fun Center - 67 Village View Lane, Moneta, off of Route 122 near Westlake, during their regular business hours: Sunday and Monday from 8 am to 3 pm; Tuesday through Thursday from 8 am to 8 pm; Friday and Saturday from 8 am to 9 pm. Prices range from $38.00 to 95.00 with trees from 5 feet to 10 feet high. Come early as the trees sell out very quickly!!

Shooting for a new movie called "Lake Effects" begins in October at Smith Mountain Lake. This is the story of a family raised on the lake. The older daughter moved away to Los Angeles to become a lawyer, the younger, an artist, now teaches art at the local elementary school and lives with her parents and their dog. When Dad dies in a sudden accident, the older sister returns home to SML to settle his estate. The next few weeks at the lake are filled with discoveries, tears and laughter as the two daughters finally understand, through the guidance of Dad's spirit, why it was so important to Dad that they grow up on the lake. For Mom, it is a journey of understanding what the lake means to her personally rather than through her husband's eyes. Of course there is humor as a local oddball leads a search for a LochNess style monster he believes lurks in the lake's depths and a few real Smith Mountain Lake characters make appearances. All these paths converge at the Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival, in a heart-warming and hilarious collision course.
Currently the cast includes Sean Patrick Flanery, Casper Van Dien, Jane Seymour, Scottie Thompson, Madeline Zima, Jeff Fahey, Ben Savage, Eyal Podell, Richard Moll, Richard Riehle, Ron Canada and Mary McDonough in Lake Effects.
So when you are traveling around the area be sure to keep your eyes out for filiming and you could have the oppurtunity to be an extra in the film.

Smith Mountain Lake was the host the ESPN's Blue Ridge Brawl this year. 95 top fishing profesionals compete for a total purse of $640,000 with the winner reciveing $100,000. The Blue Ridge Brawl is the third of eight series tournaments and the first of its Southern swing. Events in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee are scheduled to take place from late April to early June with the regular-season finale set for June 17-20 in Oklahoma.Skeet Reese, an angler competing in the tournament, darted across Smith Mountain Lake looking for his last few catches. Local anglers like Matt Adkins and Jason Harris from Danville were also tailing Reese in their boats to pick up new fishing techniques. Reese' final day's catch of 19 pounds, 14 ounces drove his winning weight to 78 pounds, 1 ounce. For his effort, he pocketed $100,000 and enhanced his lead in the Angler of the Year standings. Each of the top six finishers brought 60 pounds or more to the scales for four days.
The real estate at Smith Mountain Lake is moving on all sides of the lake. I know you do not want to be pressured to buy real estate but you may have to wait for another 10 years for another great buying season if you do not act soon! The Bedford County side saw, 6 waterfront home closings since January 2010, till today March 7th, 2010. Some of these are those great deals that people snatched up in January and December of 2009.
Franklin County has 10 in pending since January 1st of 2010, and over 11 closings since January 1st 2010 till today, March10, 2010. So if you have not decided yet, now is the time, if you really want to buy a Smith Mountain Lake waterfront property.
The prices for the homes sold range from 149,000 for waterfront residential to over 1,100,000. So of these only 3 closed under $500,000. A lot of those deals are nearly gone now. So if you want to buy a lakefront home on Smith Mountain Lake time to make a decision.
Of course if a vacation rental home is what you want and have that 1031 ready, then you have some great buys, but again you need to come on to the lake and get your check book out. Some of us who live and play at the lake are curious on why people are waiting so long, since we realize this is the last time you will see prices like this with mortgage rates like this. As a Broker I have had some of those closings and will have some of the ones I noted above coming up and understand my clients have gotten a great buy at the right time and place. So when you are ready, give me a call, we still have about 200 lakefront homes for sale right now.
