In Smith Mountain Lake and its surrounding areas, music and entertainment is never in short supply. From concerts to karaoke and everything in between, there is plenty of live entertainment for residents and visitors to enjoy, including music from all types of genres. As an integral part of this lively music scene, Hollins University is hosting an event called FiddleFest on its campus all day long each day from July 29th-July 30th.

Roanoke, VA Hollins University Fiddle Fest

FiddleFest is described as “Roanoke’s Celebration of Traditional String Music”. It was founded in 2003 and has since grown wildly in popularity, attracting diverse acts and talents. FiddleFest is a string music festival which is particularly unique because it not only boasts a thrilling concert lineup, but for those of us who also love playing string instruments there will be workshops which allow festival-goers the opportunity to meet with and learn from the performing artists!

The festival features workshops, jams, concerts and more, with vendors selling food, tee shirts, CDs, jewelry, and musical instruments among other things. You can also camp for the 2-day festival, setting up a tent or parking an RV on site and enjoying the company of fellow festival-goers.

The workshops take place during the day, with each one starting at 10:00 am. Here you can learn more about playing techniques and get insight from the artists or just enjoy the chance to sit down and play with your favorite band members. The workshops included on each day will work with the banjo, the mandolin, the guitar, the fiddle, vocals, and bass. For the full workshop schedule and a chance to see which artists will be hosting each workshop, visit the workshops info page at the FiddleFest site.

On Saturday, there will be an informal open jam session for singers, pickers and spectators in the Rathskeller Lounge featuring the Dale Ann Bradley Band.
