While at Smith Mountain Lake be sure to visit the Booker T. Washington National Monument, located at 12130 Booker T. Washington Highway
Hardy, Virginia, just south of Westlake.

Born into slavery by a white father and slave mother on the farm of James Burroughs, Washington was an orator, author, educator, and political leader.  He was representative of the last generation leaders of blacks born in slavery. He also became the first principle of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. In addition to his numerous accomplishments, he was also the author of 14 books.

The monument preserves the birthplace and commemorates his life and accomplishments.  There are nature and history trails, exhibits, a visitor center, and a bookstore on the premises.  The park is open seven days a week, year-round, from 9 AM to 5 PM.
