VISIT SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE'S STATE PARKS - http://traveltips.usatoday.com/state-parks-smith-mountain-lake-29164.html

Although only one Virgina state park is on the shores of Smith Mountain lake, two memorial parks are a short distance away and offer excursions to historic sites off the lake. Visitors can turn back the clock to what "Time" magazine dubbed "The Greatest Day" with a visit to the D-Day Memorial or step back further in time at Booker T. Washington's birthplace.

Smith Mountain Lake State Park offers a wide variety of outdoor fun in Virginia.

Smith Mountain Lake State Park

On the shores of the lake, Smith Mountain Lake State Park accommodates overnight visitors with its variety of options. Whether you decide to pitch a tent, stay in a cabin, or reserve a bunk in the Camping Lodge Bunkhouse, you're sure to enjoy the park's many amenities, which include hiking along marked trails, swimming, boating and fishing. Booker T. Washington National Monument

Seventeen miles from Smith Mountain Lake State Park, Booker T. Washington was born and spent his formative years on Burroughs Plantation, now Booker T. Washington National Monument. Visitors can take part in a guided tour or walk the grounds on their own. Those who are interested in exploring can take the Plantation Trail, which passes the reconstruction of a 19th century farm, then stop by the farm and garden areas to learn how farms of the day operated. National D-Day Memorial Park

The National D-Day Memorial details the enormity of World War II in Bedford, Virginia, 22 miles north of Smith Mountain Lake State Park. Visitors can take in the Landing Beach tableau, which includes artistic recreations of a landing craft, beach obstacles and exploding fountains to depict defensive fire, and the Richard S. Reynolds Sr. Garden, which offers statues and busts of the day's greatest heroes. National D-Day Memorial 3 Overlord Circle Bedford, VA 24523 540-587-3619 www.dday.org
