The Oakley Blue Ridge Big Bass Classic will return to Smith Mountain Lake April 21 & 22, 2012! Single day entry is $100 per angler;oakley_big_bass two day entry is $150. Registration will be held at Bridgewater Marina on Friday April 20, from noon to 8pm. Get there early because the first 100 entrants will receive a FREE custom Quantum rod!

Lynchburg, VA's 3rd Annual GETDOWNTOWN Street Festival

For an entertainment experience that’s unique to the Lynchburg area and some exciting live acts the whole family can enjoy, bring everyone out to the 3rd Annual GET!DOWNTOWN Street Festival on September 9 from 6:00-9:00 p.m.

The festival was created to welcome area college students to Lynchburg and to showcase the opportunities and amenities available downtown for students and their parents. It is conveniently located near Smith Mountain Lake, and the event is completely free and open to the general public. Main Street will be closed to traffic during the event, and the festival will include:

  • Live musicians
  • Dance performances
  • Downtown stores and restaurants to browse
  • Area vendors and crafters to shop from
  • Face painting, caricature and balloon artists, stilt walking and dances for the kids
  • Two stages with street musicians performing all along Main Street
  • Downtown restaurants and food vendors

With more than 10,000 people in attendance in 2010, this year is sure to be even bigger and attract even more exciting performances and vendors. The festival provides a venue for downtown cultural organizations, merchants, restaurants and retailers to reach out to the community and showcase the very best of the Lynchburg area. Come out and get involved in the community,support local musicians, businesses and vendors, and just a have a great time!

Wing-lovers of all ages are invited to come out to Elmwood Park in Downtown Roanoke from 11 am-7 pm on August 27th to enjoy the Roanoke Wing Fest.

With some of the best wings Southwest Virginia has to offer, you’re in for a treat when you come sample wings from local restaurants and enjoy live music, beer, and tailgate tournaments all day! Choose your favorite wings while you sample, and there will be judges present to pick the official Best Wing in Roanoke.

If you’re in a competitive mood, grab a friend and enter your team into the 2011 Tailgate Games at the Wing Fest. Two person teams compete to pick the best Cornhole players. Games start at 2 pm, and the top 3 teams will receive trophies. The winner will receive an unannounced grand prize! In addition, the event is family friendly so there is also a Kids Tailgate Games area where the kids can play cornhole, sponsored by Woods Service Centers. Keep the kids entertained while you enjoy your wings and other festival fares!

Wing related contests and games will happen all day at the wing fest.

Tickets are only $5 for adults and kids 12 and under are free. Small sample packs of wings will be sold by each wing vendor so you or your group can try them all!

The wing fest proceeds benefit the Brain Injury Services of Southwest Virginia, so you will be eating and enjoying the live entertainment for a worthy cause. Learn more about their cause at their website here.

Elmwood Park in nearby Roanoke is hosting a huge event this summer-the 14th Annual Microfestivus!

Microfestivus is a micro and craft beer festival with a huge selection of over 100 or more beers from over two-dozen different micro and craft breweries from the Mid-Atlantic Region. The Square Society is bringing Roanoke a wonderful opportunity to enjoy great food AND great music on August 13, 2011 from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm in scenic Elmwood Park.

There will also be food from Blue 5, The Lunch Box, Dogtown Pizza, The Quarter, and various other vendors available to enjoy while you participate in the beer tasting bash.

If you are 21 or over you may choose to purchase tickets that allow you regular admission without beer tasting, a souvenir glass and 10 servings of beer, a souvenir glass and 21 servings of beer, or VIP admission and sponsorship tickets. One serving measures 4 oz, and you can receive 4, 8, or 12 oz at a time in your souvenir glass.

Tickets to the event can be bought online before August 7th in order to receive the best discount. The online sales end at 11:00 pm on Friday, August 12th. You may also buy your tickets at the gate. Ticket prices and information are listed here at the event website.

Have you heard about the exciting wakeboarding scene here at Smith Mountain Lake?

Smith Mountain Lake boasts 500 miles of shoreline, making it the perfect venue for water sports and activities. Locals and visitors can always enjoy its many amenities and take part in the opportunity to get out on the lake and try activities such as parasailing, wakeboarding, jet skiing, water skiing, knee boarding, tubing, water skiing, wake skating, sailing and more.

Competitively and recreationally, wakeboarding and wake skating are moving up among the ranks of the most popular water sports here at Smith Mountain Lake, with many of our residents receiving sponsorships and traveling around the country to compete with other water sports enthusiasts. Recently a new website has been developed at Smith Mountain Lake Wakeboarding dedicated to promoting the growth and popularity of these sports at the lake. The site includes event info and will soon feature photo galleries, a forum and more.


As their first event, Smith Mountain Lake Wakeboarding is hosting a wakeboarding competition at Indian Pointe Marina on July 16th, 2011 from 10:00 am – 7:30 pm.

The Peaks of Otter Winery, known for its “Fruit of the Farm” wines which are made from a variety of fruits such as apples, grapes, blackberries, blueberries, peaches, chili peppers, cherries, elderberries and more grown on the farm, will be hosting a “Peachy” open house from July 23-24th, July 30th-31st, and August 6-7, 13-14, and 20-21st.

The open house will provide a chance to sample the fresh peaches, nectarines and apples that they use to make the wine. You are invited to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the pavilion, orchards and vineyard with family and friends.

Guests are also invited to purchase a bottle of wine to enjoy while admiring the scenic orchards and vineyard at the Peaks of Otter Winery, located in Bedford near the beautiful Smith Mountain Lake. You may bring your own glass, purchase a souvenir glass, or taste wine out of a free plastic cup that will be provided.

The event will feature plenty of farm animals for children and families to enjoy together, making this the perfect adult and kid-friendly event. While visiting, be sure to head over to visit the nearby National D-Day Memorial and the Bedford Museum and Poplar Forest.

As always, the winery will also be featuring an assortment of jams and jellies for sale, and U-pick fruit when in season. This includes fresh apples, peaches, blackberries, nectarines, plums and raspberries. The winery is open daily from April-July from 12 pm- 5 pm, August-November 9 am- 5 pm, and December-May they are open on weekends from 12 pm-5 pm or during the week by chance or appointment.

If you’d like to come out and support our local volunteer Fire, Rescue, and Dive department here at Smith Mountain Lake, what better way to do it than with a delicious meal of chicken and barbeque and bluegrass music?

The dedicated members of the Scruggs dive team will be cooking the flavorful par-boiled chicken, and the meal will also include biscuits, beans, potato salad, beverages and dessert. It is all-you-can-eat and will be going on rain or shine.


When/Where: The fundraiser dinner takes places on Saturday, June 25th from 3:00 – 7:00 pm at the Volunteer Fire, Rescue and Dive station, at the intersection of Scruggs Road and Bluewater Drive.

Fee: There is no entry fee, but guests can make a free-will donation to go toward the Scruggs volunteers.

Live Music: Not only will there be delicious food, but there will be door prizes and live bluegrass music played by the Johnathan Dillon Band.

A portion of the event's proceeds also go to toward equipment purchases, such as a generator that will allow the facilities to serve as disaster emergency shelters for the community.


Come out and help the people who volunteer their time to help keep our community and its members safe!

The Smith Mountain Lake Powerboating Association is bringing us their annual PWC Only Poker Run on Saturday, June 25th.

This event is unique because personal watercraft operators will travel the lake on their jet skis, picking up playing cards and competing with others for the best hand.

The proceeds are to benefit the Smith Mountain Lake Rescue Volunteers. Come gamble for a good cause!
In order to participate, you must pay an entry fee and captains must be at least 18 years old.

Entry Fees included are:
Captains: $75 (Includes poker run participation, Awards banquet)
Riders: $75 (Limit 1 rider per jet ski. This includes poker run and awards)
Rider/Guest: $15 (Limit 1 rider per jet ski, and includes awards banquet)


To pre-register for this fun-filled summer event, you can go in person to Mango’s Bar & Grill or come early for regular registration to the Webster Marine Center on the day of the event.

This weekend make sure and go by the Southwest Virginia Boat show and the Ronaoke Civic center to kick off your boating season. The boat show is a great way to catch all the newest boating and lake gear for your next adventure at Smith Mountain Lake. This years participating sponsors are Ace Marine, Conrad Bothers Marine, Hughs Marine, Smith Mountain Boat & Tackle, Virgil Naff SeaDoo, Magnum Boating, Smith Mountain Lake Yacht Club and Webster Marine. The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the U.S Power Squadron will be there to answer any boating or lake questions you have.
